I wrote a paper in high school comparing Emerson and Thoreau. It seemed to me that Emerson was the smarter of the two because he found his freedom among society, rather than retreating to the woods as Thoreau did.
I don’t remember much from high school academics, but I remember the impact of writing that paper. I remember understanding that I would be a far stronger person if I persevered within the confines of whatever was oppressing me, rather than running.
