It seemed to me that Emerson was the smarter of the two because he found his freedom among society, rather than retreating to the woods as Thoreau did. I don't remember much from high school academics, but I remember the impact of writing that paper. I remember understanding that I would be a far stronger person if I persevered within the confines of whatever was oppressing me, rather than running. Beautiful post, Melissa.
